Like many tradesman of his generation, Garry's 40+ years of tiling eventually took its toll on his back. With the absence of current machinery to transport tiles to the roof tops, it was a slow and dangerous job carrying a bunch of tiles up ladders while negotiating gravity, trying not to fall.
After the first of two major back operations, the surgeon recommended either swimming or bike riding as as an activity to keep him moving while not placing any strain on his back.
As a keen cyclist, the prospect of not riding wasn't very appealing, so for Garry this came as good news.
Seven years ago after seeing all the road bikes zipping past while riding his trusty mountain bike, one of the blokes introduced him to the world of road cycling and Garry hasn't looked back. His first bike was an entry level Orbea (The spanish bike brand) which was half alloy, half carbon, these were gradually upgraded to Cervelo's.
Today was the inagural ride of his new R3 Cervelo with electronic shifting that proved to be a little tricky with the gloves as he inadvertently changed the gears without meaning to. All in all a very satisfying first ride and an amazing morning with clear skies and a frosty 1 degree.
Given that the bike was over $5000, it is a relatively modest investment in his health and well being as Garry aims to have the bike for many years to come with his anticipated kilometres this year of 5000, so per km it's a relatively cheap activity.
