At the Mount Lofty Summit during the Tour Down Under we met up with Karly Fox who was ‘a little bit hot, a little bit tired and my legs are in a lot of pain, but otherwise I’m good, fantastic’.
Karly got into cycling in 2009 after seeing how much fun her Mum was having getting up at 5am and meeting new people. Back then Karly bought an Argon 18 Krypton with mechanical integra on it. ‘It’s a reliable steed and I still commute on it every day but I got it because I just went to where my Mum got her bike and I think he had a whole lot of them laying around so he said ‘This bike would be perfect for you’’.
To celebrate turning 30, Karly treated herself to an S-works Amira and the difference between the two bikes? – ‘It’s like going from riding in a horse and carriage to riding in a Lamborghini. This thing’s where it’s at. I’m working on getting a pair of Chris King hubs to stick in there – I think it would match that little pink bit on the side of the bike – I think that would look fun. I do need a touch more colour. Chris King hubs, I hear, go like a dream as well’.
Not having appropriate wheels for the new purchase meant that Karly is currently running on borrowed wheels, so they are on the shopping list too.
‘It’s probably an expensive per kilo bicycle because it’s very very light, but it’s worth it’.
Karly is not far through her five years’ study to become a plastic surgeon but despite the heavy work and study load she still rides every day to work. Now despite only working 3kms from home, she has turned it into a 25-30km trip – the Brisbane River Loop.
What’s some of her favourite rides for those in the Brisbane area?
‘There’s so many great rides around Brisbane. Out to Brookfield. Samford. Dayboro. Montville. The Montville ride was about 150kms so we stayed overnight and came back the next dy. I nearly died at the end of that, but it was good. We did it in Winter so it wasn’t too hot.
Speaking of hot – is that a problem riding in Brisbane?
‘Not really. You break out in a sweat in Brisbane as soon as you get out of bed in the morning so being on a bike isn’t that much different. You’re just a bit more sweaty.’
Karly met up with the ‘Take Off’ team when she was working in Macky (Mackay) for six months in 2013 but has stayed in touch despite moving to Brisbane and still heads down to the Tour Down Under with them.
What have you got your eye on for your next bike?
‘I think I still have a lot of time left in this one so I’ll probably just upgrade the components. Maybe a bespoke Titanium one to celebrate finishing my studies’ (In the first year of 5 to be a plastic surgeon).
Karly loves the long days of riding, ‘I love just tapping it out for days on end.’
